A Wave of Love

"Most new discoveries are suddenly-seen things that were always there." Sasanne K. Langer

So today we were helping out with Rust Street Ministries in San Angelo! This is a blessed ministry which helps the poor with food, clothing, furniture and all the things we usually fill our homes with! We arrived this morning to open arms of volunteers and employees of this ministry who were willing to put us to work but first we began with a morning devotional. From being here just a day and a half, these people have it figured out! So far everywhere we have been, I have seen people of the community coming together to relieve hunger in their community but in different ways. There isn't one specific right way I would say to solve the problem of hunger but I do believe it needs to be tailored for each unique community. Seeing this has been very eye opening, indeed. Listening to Bob, the Director of Rust Street Ministries as he explained it is churches from the community who come together, writing the funding in each of their budgets as well as staffing the ministry with caring volunteers. Also, it's churches from all different denominations, affiliations and backgrounds. So many times I feel like there is an unspoken rule that if I am baptist, Southern Baptist to be exact, it is only Southern Baptist churches I can work with and that is only if I HAD to reach out. Here, it's seen as "this is what needs to happen and this is how it's going to get done." I don't know, you just don't see that anywhere... and in Texas of all states. Maybe we do know what's going on... ha. It was beautiful, in the end it doesn't matter what religion we are, or what affiliation of Baptist we are or if we are affiliated at all. What matters is our relationship with Christ and being a Christian (a little Christ) and showing people and the poor Christ's love!

In Bob's devotion, he remind the crew about Jesus' love for the poor and how he continued to help them. He didn't turn away, he loved them and helped them.... as we should!

It would be great to see this happening more around Texas. This same set up of all churches in the community coming together to serve the poor of the community. Jesus called the church to be his hands and feet! As I was talking to my grandfather about this, he said this is the way it should be and it would be great if hunger could be solved like this and leave politics out of it. I totally agree.
